My family has never been really big on lineage or ancestry.  On one hand, my midwestern Grandma could have presented our family history within the confines of a shoebox, the contents inside consisting of a stack of extremely old photographs that are fairly unlabelled and mostly are those crazy Victorian era, 19th century group portraits where everyone looks like they’re having the worst...

quick anecdote; as I was riding the train back from a recent interview, a guy and a girl walked on board with a fixed gear, plaid, and tattoos in tow. as they sat in front of me I couldn’t help but wonder why the legal profession isn’t more open to a broader range of wardrobe choices. I realized I hadn’t done much of anything with this measly blog of mine; so I’m trying to...

so, it’s two-thousand and ten and I guess denial of that fact is my first order of business this year. so! here is a mixture of audible beauties. The list itself is intentionally all over the place; a twist of some catchy, bright tunes [because I can’t ignore the great stuff that’s come out since the end of 2009] and some softer songs I hold quite dear to my heart, a...

I don’t share things usually. This is a definite anomaly. Guess I’m trying to branch out a bit. Wrote it in a bout of sleeplessness in early April. There are beautiful Miniature landscapes crafted In the walls of my skull Where caricatures Of the people I know Live where midday shadows Are corned to nonexistence. points of interest.
for one, um. My Old Kentucky Blog. Number one in my heart [as far as music blogs go], and there’s ample evidence in the past two days to prove it!  The Donora video with the crazy hula hoop chick? The avett brothers’ session?  Some super tunes on their radio playlist? New Islands single? And (finally) the Very Best + M.I.A. track?  I found myself in a position to repost everything they...

…but this is way too good not to share (via GvB). The Dum Dum Girls, while doing their thing in Seattle, did a cover of the Ronettes’ “Be My Baby.” I never realized how good Dee Dee’s voice actually is.  For realzz. a bit distorted, and the guitarist has some issues in the beginning, but hey, that’s live music. and there you have it.

Strand of Oaks.
So I spent the majority of my late afternoon and evening trapped in a wave of embarrassment.  I’m prone to confusing myself into such situations, but this one was a real marvel. Anyway, I went on a bit of a music rampage through the world wide web in hopes to take my mind away from those events, and actually came up with some really remarkable finds. What is most memorable (and worth...

atlantic brotherhood.
something I wrote about a close friendship of mine back in those scattered teenage years. In the summer we used to sit out on this dock by my house and have these elongated conversations about certain aspects of life, why we love the atlantic, and why our romantic endeavours never seemed to work out. I guess this was written when I realized that we weren’t nearly as close as we once were,...

blocks of color.
So, I’ve been M.I.A. I’m not too wonderful at blogging consistently. I do have a mix. Which is a bit of a different compliation that I would usually be inclined to piece together. For one, there are absolutely no mandolins, acoustic guitars, raw, breathy, minimalistic live recordings. I have put aside my plaid shirt (one of the 8, as was pointed out to my recently) and...

I do not know French. Nor do I know anything about 60’s French girl music artists. But this is my new favorite thing. swing, mademoiselle. Essentially, this girl has compiled an absolutely massive list of tracks from French girl artists from the ’60s. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

Two v's.
I must admit. If there’s a plethora of l-o-v-e directed at a new act coming from a seemingly endless line of salivating, robotic lemming-types [at least that’s how the whole scene is concocted in my head], I tend to hit the ground running in the other direction. I guess you could call me a hater. My roommates would prefer to call me a music “elitist” but I...

after one rather long late night youtube bonanza… Taking Woodstock. Looks amazing. Demitri Martin, Liev Schreiber, Emile Hirsch, Paul Dano…I’m pumped. I don’t usually go to movies, in fact most can attest to the fact that I really haven’t seen any…at all, but I will definitely be looking for this. Absolutely.

The coincidence was too much.
Judge as you will, but I spent a great deal of time yesterday reliving some sweet sweet nostaliga through the greatest 90s pop songs I could find. Needless to say, Ace of Base made the cut. It just so happens that Major Lazer released a mix for Miksha’s Keep Watch installments that includes, you guessed it, a track featuring no other than All That She Wants by the illustrious Ace of Base. ...

embrace the chaos.
Names can be ironic.  Take Micachu and the Shapes for example.  I’ve never heard a band that defies all proper definitions.  You know, the kinds that use words?  To categorize?  To give you some kind of semblance of what they’re all about?  I can’t describe any kind of shape that Micachu and her crew would fit into.  For the most part you have bands that will either fit right...

Bluegrass. Again.
Alright, so we’re going to continue in the bluegrass, America vein.  I mean, how could I stop when bands like Cadillac Sky keep finding their way to my eardrums?  That’s what I thought. Now, past the over arching stamp of bluegrass approval, categorizing the band becomes a bit more difficult.  The bluegrass is most certainly there; spine shaking mandolins, clanging banjos, humming...

the south will rise again...
It’s rare that I pay any attention to invites to join groups and such on facebook; they’re usually pointless junk and from people I don’t know. However, I’m quite glad I paid attention to a recent one. The band looking for support was Michael Ford, Jr. and the Apache Relay, besides having one fantastic name for a band [why are bluegrass folks so good at that?], is truly...

afternoon browsing, endless procrastination.
There’s this sports show called ‘around the horn.’  I don’t really understand the point of it, but I feel that the title applies to what I have to say today.  I’ve basically spent the past few hours emersed in a busy escapade of browsing the internet’s finest musical offerings, making the rounds at all the familiar stops. Some things I’ve found today that...

I must say, I’m really getting my money’s worth in satellite today.  Not only did I get a rather inexpensive coffee [due to lack of quarters and the charity of the stranger behind the counter], but I also am receiving a free sauna session.  Yes, the humidity inside satellite today makes me wonder if I should put a bucket at the end of my spine.  [was that too much information?] Moving...

Lewis & Clarke (w/ Caroline Weeks, Corridor) - July 24th - The Church I distinctly remember my first encounter with Lewis & Clarke.  It was one of those terrifically ordinary rainy days at the end of march, the kind that offer themselves up in abundance here in philadelphia as if to say spring’s procrastination is almost over.  Well, L&C’s music is a bit like that.  Each...

steel guitars and the smell of rain on pavement.
I guess the monsoon of june is back for an encore in july.  Don’t mind it, except the bike gets a little wet.  Anyway, fits perfectly with my afternoon project. After having my eyes opened to the likes of Mississippi Fred McDowell, Bukka White, Bishop Perry Tillis, Kid Prince Moore, and Blind Willie McTell on this drizzly, caffeine-induced afernoon, I find I’m all kinds of trapped in...

surfing - redefined.
Unless you are all caught up on who’s who in the inner circle of the world’s top innovate designers, the name Thomas Meyerhoffer may not ring any bells.  But his design projects over the past decade have all had massive impacts on their respective industries.  From windsurfing, to snowboards, to computers he’s revolutionized the field. Basically the guy’s a fucking...

chill out.
Philadelphia summers are hot.  I don’t care what you say about southern states - there is a comparable level of miserableness when it comes to a sweltering Philly summer afternoon.  And while it may be true that Philly people just love to complain about any seasonal weather [read: anything at all], this time, it’s no joke. So this mix allows all those landlocked, cement ridden folks...
